Farley's Blog
Head Coach Scott Farley shares his thoughts on events past, present and future!!!Hi all and welcome to Farley’s end-of–season blog.
I won’t say too many ‘thank you’s here as I will save them for the Presentation Night.
Well, what a season! 14 months unbeaten, runners-up in the League and quarter-finalists in the League Cup. If someone had offered me that at the start of the season I would have taken it with both hands.
As many of you will know, there are certain games over the course of a season that you can look back on and say that result cost us dearly. The two home draws were the difference between us and Harlow - the 4-4 game with Leyton Orient, where they equalised with the last kick of the game, and the 2-2 game against Barking. We should have won the Orient game 10-4! Ironic when our two strikers finished the season with nearly 60 goals between them. The loss against Harlow would not have mattered if we had won one of those games and we would have been champions.
We could have no complaints about the loss. We were simply not at the races in the middle of the park that day and when you play a team of Harlow’s quality any weak links will be exploited, which is exactly what happened.
The 14 month unbeaten run (from 20th November, 2006 to 3rd February, 2008) was an wonderful achievement for both the girls and the club. As I said in the press report at the time, not many teams can say they had such an amazing transformation in two seasons from losing almost every game to becoming almost unbeatable. This just shows the hard work put in by everyone.
Looking ahead to next season, I am very excited for many reasons. Most of the squad are hoping they will be re-signed and we have had a good response to our trials dates from outside the club with a number of other players registering their interest. I have seen several of them play a few times already and I know they will bring additional quality to our squad if they join us.
It might seem harsh, but strengthening the squad year-on-year is something we must do if we are to make a serious challenge for the title next year as there will be some strong teams in our division. It is also essential to enable us to push towards our ultimate goal of becoming a serious force in ladies football.
I will post my next blog once we have signed on our new squad. In the meantime, see you all at the Presentation Evening.
